Microphones are one of the essential elements in your music production. In music production, they are used for recording vocals and instruments.
Below are the various types of microphones and their applications in music production.
There are four types of microphones that can be used in various stages of music production. They are as follows:
- Dynamic Microphones
- Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphones
- Small Diaphragm Condenser Microphones
- Ribbons Microphones
DYNAMIC MICROPHONE
According to Merriam Webster dictionary, a dynamic microphone is a microphone in which the sound waves cause a movable wire or coil to vibrate in a magnetic field and thus induce a current.
Dynamic microphones use the same dynamic principle as a loudspeaker but
in reverse. A diaphragm is attached to a small movable induction coil
positioned in the magnetic field of a permanent magnet.
Dynamic microphones are cheap, durable don't need a power supply to work
and by that, they are preferred for live performance.
Dynamic microphones, as they are naturally low sensitive, they are used
in recording loud sounds like
- Loud Vocals
- Drums
- Guitars and Bass amplifiers
LARGE DIAPHRAGM CONDENSER MICROPHONES
A large diaphragm microphone is a condenser microphone with a bigger
capsule. The big size of its capsule makes it more sensitive thus making
the recorded voice sound larger and fuller.
This type of microphone is used to record-
- vocals
- drums
- acoustic guitar
Small Diaphragm Condensor Microphone
A small-diaphragm condenser microphone has a smaller capture compared to a large diagram microphone. The size of its diaphragm makes it record neutral, uncoloured sounds. It is best for recording-
- choirs
- acoustic guitar
- piano
- string ensemble
